The Camera Lucida is an optical device that allowed you to see what you wanted to paint or draw by reflecting it on to your paper or canvas. All you need to do is to trace the subject, no more struggling to get the perspective or someone's features accurate. It’s simple, effective, and fun! This tool has been used by the Great Masters of fine arts since it was invented, by William Hyde Wollaston, in 1807. It was later improved by Alexander Alexander in 1830; also known as mirror type camera lucida or Graphic Mirror. Today two centuries later you are able to purchase this same tool fine tuned by Ancient Magic Art Tools. This model of Camera Lucida dose the same thing as the small prism models; only unlike many prism lucidas, with this Lucida no lenses are needed and you get clear images no matter the distance from the subject. Plus the reflected image is much larger up to 27in wide x 32in tall (see diagrams on the left), and this Lucida is a fraction of the price and much better looking. Unlike an Opaque projector or art projector, this Camera Lucida requires no electricity, and you are not limited to just copying pictures. You can reflect anything onto paper or canvas: pictures, paintings, landscapes, portraits, figures, still lifes. And you can reflect the image onto paper or Canvas or anything else you want to: dishes, crafts, rocks, t-shirts, your arm. Whether you are a Modern Master or just an Art Enthusiast who wants to paint like a professional, this is a very useful tool for any artists; but remember, this is a tool not a toy, so it is not recommended for small children. You have two interchangeable screens to works with: one is half-silvered acrylic mirror and the other is clear acrylic glass. The half-silvered mirror works best in most situations, no special lighting is needed and it works on white paper. The clear glass works best on black paper (then no special lighting is needed) or when the subject is much brighter then work space because in these cases the half-silvered mirror can some times reflect an image that is so bright that you cannot see your pencil. With these two screens you will have a wide workable light range. Built-in clamp to secure Camera Lucida to any table up to 3 ¼“(8.3cm) thick Lightweight and compact for easy storage and transportation Sturdy Hardwood construction with a beautiful protective Walnut finish The mirror, half-silvered mirror and clear glass are all acrylic (plexi-glass) for strength and safety. Screens easily side out for cleaning and switchingAdjustable: to fit your height The camera head swivels and pivots up and down to project the image right where you need it Stands between 18½in—25in (47cm—63.5cm) tallHand crafted with attention to detail in the USA Assembly requires sliding in two bolts and putting on a couple nuts—anyone can do it in a few minutes. Helpful instruction included This is called “the Studio Camera Lucida” because it needs to be clamped (will built-in clamp) to a table or workspace, but you can use it anywhere—indoors or outdoors—as long as you have somewhere to clamp it. The image you get with the Camera Lucida is perfectly sharp, and you are able to make the image as translucent or as opaque as you want. So you can imagine how easy your own Camera Lucida will make it to draw and paint realistically same as artists have been doing for hundreds of years. It uses the same basic scientific principles that movie make used before the days of computer graphics to make translucent ghosts and it is still the way Disney Land’s Haunted Mansion ghosts are made; the Camera Lucida dose the same thing only it make a translucent image of whatever you put in front of it appear on your paper or canvas so you can trace it. The size of the reflected image varies depending on the height at which the Camera Lucida is set. The pictures to the left show the different image sizes at varying heights. Depending on how tall you are, you will be able to use this Camera Lucida up to a certain height and still be able to reach your drawing surface while look in the view hole in the top of the Camera Lucida. You can extend the height at which you can work by attaching a longer handle onto your pencil, if you are really trying to draw the biggest drawing possible. This Camera Lucida is designed to exceed most people’s ability to reach its maximum reflection capability, so that it will never limit you: the only limitation with be how tall you are and how long a handle you want to attach to your pencil. To get an idea of how large you will be able to work at your height look at the pictures to the left, which show the different image sizes at varying heights. Next to each picture it tells you how high above the table the viewing hole will be at that height, so, for example, around the center position it will be 21½in (53.3cm) from the table, so using a measuring tape position you head about that high above a table and see how far you can reach and how long a handle you would need to reach farther. This Camera Lucida is adjustable to stand anywhere between 18½in(47cm)—25in(63.5cm), so use the measuring tape to see how far you can reach at all these heights. If, for example, the maximum size you can reach is 27in wide X 21in tall, but you wanted to draw a 54in x 21in drawing you can draw one half then move it over and draw the other half, so you can make quite large drawings and painting, and there is no limit on how small a work you can create. The camera head on this Camera Lucida can pivot up and down or, in other words, rock back and forth; this is very important because as the camera head rocks back and forth it moves the reflected image up and down relative to your paper or canvas. This feature will allow you to center a face or bowl of fruit on your canvas, and when you draw a landscape, it will allow you to choose whether you want to pivot it down to paint the river in the valley, or pivot it up to draw the mountains. Some camera lucidas do not have this feature, they have a camera head that is fixed in place, which can be very frustrating because you may have to elevate a still life to get it to center on the paper, or you will not be able to draw the river or the mountains—you will be stuck drawing the empty field in the middle. To zoom in and out, change the distance between the Camera Lucida and object. The closer the object the bigger it will be, and the farther the object the smaller it will be. So you can use the Camera Lucida to shrink and a large the drawing or painting, or use it to enlarge a small drawing or picture. You can enlarge a 5x7 (12.7cm X 17.8cm) picture to any size up to about 14in X 16in (35.6cm X 40.7cm). You can enlarge a 8x10 (20.3cm X 25.4cm) picture to any size up to about 15½in X 17½in (39.4cm X 44.4cm). Experiment and have fun. That is the best way to get the most out of you camera Lucida. Camera Lucidas are what inspired William Henry Fox Talbot to invent photography on paper, so they are great for teaching the history of art, but they are primarily very practical drawing tool, and my model sells for 25%-50% less than other camera lucidas available, so any school could supply multiple sets for their students. Contact me if you need my venders Federal Tax Number for school or business purchases. You could end up paying $200.00 to $400.00 for a wobbly Camera Lucida that reflects a much smaller image, or you could get this beautiful Hardwood Camera Lucida for $79.00! Calculated shipping to the USA. Worldwide shipping at discounted prices. I sell a high percentage of my products over seas, so international shipping is not a problem. I understand that international shipping prices can be expensive, so I lowered all my international shipping prices at my own expense. Plus with the weak dollar, buying from the USA is a great deal right now. Thanks for looking! Email with any questions.
