Description
I made this shuttle using 4000 year old Irish bog oak. One side of the shuttle was exterior wood so I decided to leave that side of this piece completely natural with just a minimal amount of polishing. I think the contrast between the two sides of the shuttle is great and it's amazing to think that this little piece of wood actually saw the sun 4000 years ago and lasted until now! It measures approx. 2 1/4 inches long.'Bog wood is a rare timber which is excavated from deep underground, usually as a by-product of turf cutting, or when bogland is drained for agricultural use. The wood varies in age, usually ranging between 2,000 and 6,000 years old. The wood has been preserved due to the unique conditions of the Turf bogs, which waterlog the wood and keep it free from oxygen and sunlight which would cause it to decay. The chemistry of the Bog also reacts with the wood and transforms it's colour, having a different effect upon the three regularly found species of Scots Pine, Oak and Yew. Bog Oak is usually jet black, but occasionally a very dark brown.'I have been working with wood and other natural materials for most of my life. I love to find new materials to work on, and have tried many, many different mediums. I personally do not believe in using any synthetic materials or even dyes. This is because I believe that mother nature can provide all the colour and variety you could ever need...you just have to look! I have recently decided to offer some of my pieces online, naturally enough in the hopes of reaching a larger audience.
