Description
Carbide Woodturning Chisel Wood Lathe Woodworking Tool   Click to View Image Album      The item description will be here. This is for one 16 1/2 inch long wood lathe turning chisel with a 5/8 polished and blued shaft and your choice of one of six different styles of carbide insert screwed to the end in a milled pocket. Each style and size cutting insert requires it's own handle. They are not interchangable. The insert is positive ground and lapped for wood turning, although it is c-5 carbide, intended for cutting steel at a high rate of speed in metal lathes. At 86 Rockwell hardness it is very hard and abrasive resistant stuff. The factory now produces these inserts for us to our specifications, diamond grinding them to a nice angle for wood cutting. We mill the shaft, polish and blue the steel and add a cusioned replacable handle for your extreme comfort and enjoyment.( yeah, you're right, it's a golf club grip.)The smooth 600 mesh final lap on the insert leaves a great finish on the wood. Greater spindle speeds are possible without dulling the cutter, which not only saves time in turning, the greater speed also leaves a better finish that requires less sanding. My first turning experience with these chisels was in turning a large spindle from mesquite for a table.By the time I got the spindle rounded off and running true, I had the speed up so high that I had to wear a glove on my left hand because the shavings were so hot coming off the workpiece that it was starting to burn my hand, and the cutter still didn't dull. When (finally) the cutter starts getting dull, you can loosen the screw with an allen wrench,(provided)and rotate the cutter to a new position. When it is dull all the way around you can either sharpen it with a diamond file, take it to the saw shop,or return it to me for sharpening.I would recomend the first two alternatives, because the diamond files are getting quite cheap, and postage to me and back isn't. Your choices are as follows; 1/2" round nose, 5/8" round nose, 3/4" round nose, 1/2" square nose, 5/8" square nose, and 3/4" triangle nose, all as pictured. Please let us know which of the 6 chisels you want. Want to pay by credit card, or have questions? call 1-800-840-2434. Shipped by priority mail. Thanks for looking.
