McMichael wrote as a comprehensive course to show the painting techniques of several noted American china painters from the 1890's.   Sylvia's philosophy was for her students to read as many books and articles as possible to cultivate the pupil's taste by the study of good models.  To take instructions from as many teachers as the student wishes; as the student can learn something from each one.  While taking from one teacher, follow the style she teaches closely, learning to execute the method properly before the student attempts to put his character into it.  The student's individuality will develop better when backed by a thorough knowledge of the art. This textbook has 12 lessons with variable pages for each lesson and illustrations in black and white for each lesson.
