Description
Alexander the Great One of the most famous conquerors in World History. He was the son of Fillipos and Olymbiada. As a young man he was taught Greek philosophy, art and science, his best-known tutor being Aristotle, and he was considered a very arduous and intelligent young man. His teacher, Aristotle’s, was one of the most famous philosophers of all times. Alexander was fascinated by Hellenic poetry. His dream was to create a big Hellenic empire and to eliminate Persians in the Mediterranean Sea. After his father’s death (at the age of twenty), he became the king of Macedonian. He managed to reunite all the Greeks and to expand the Hellenic Empire up until India. Because of his great qualifications and military abilities he was known to never have lost a battle. It has been said that the leadership of Alexander inspired men like Caesar, Great Constantine, and Napoleon. He was the only one who managed to solve the Gordian knot by cutting it with his sword. Alexander died 33 years old in 323 B.C., leaving behind a vast empire. Bronze – Lost wax method Handmade by Mycenaean Center The lost wax technique allows the artizan to achive the greatest details in each statue or sculpture. When we want to create a statue in bronze first of all we need to create a model in fresh clay. We sculpure the clay in order to give the shape we want. The clay model is ready but it is 96% (per cent) perfect. With a special procedure which takes a lot of time we transfer the model from clay to plaster. Plaster is a harder material which we can work better and we can add or remove pieces where neseccary. Now the model of the statue is 98% (per cent) perfect. Then the last model is that of wax. Again with a special procedure we transfer the plaster model to a wax model. The wax model is the last model where the sculptor can give the last details to the statue. Now the model is 100% (per cent) perfect. From this wax model we will create the bronze statue. We cover the wax model with clay and we put it in the kiln. So we produce a ceramic shell of sufficient strength to withstand the weight of the molten bronze. But first we have created some breathers on the surface of the statue. In the kiln with the temperature the clay becomes hard. The wax is melted out of the ceramic shell (hence the name, the Lost-Wax process), the shell is preheated to 1900 degrees and the molten bronze (bronze melts to 1300 degrees) is poured in and left to cool. Inside there we will put the bronze which we have melt in 1300 (thousand three hundred ) degrees of Celcious. When we take the shell out of the kiln we have to break it in order to take the bronze statue. The bronze statue is not ready. We have to clean it, and cut the breathers. Finally, the surface of the bronze must be patinated (colored), a process which occurs naturallywith oxidation. In a country with such a great history in Art and Culture there are so little that continue the tradition and can get you so close to Ancient Greece.
