Description
These beautiful Kashmiri rugs were purchased from the individual artisans in the capital city of Kashmir: Srinagar. Handmade using the Ari Hookwork technique the rugs are made exclusively by the men of the village. An individual rug in the 3x5 or 4x6 size can take over one entire month to complete. The handwork is exacting and masterful. Each rug is an individual, distinct piece of artwork, no two pieces will ever be the same. The color selection and designs are bright, beautiful and complimentary to a vast array of decors. Kashmiri wool (cashmere) is considered the finest wool in the world. It is extremely soft, comfortable, durable and easy to clean. Kashmir is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Historically the term Kashmir was used to refer to the valley lying between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal range.Srinagar is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India, and is situated in the valley of Kashmir. The city is famous for its lakes and houseboats floating over them, as well as for its traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and expert artisans. Kashmir is the main center for chain stitch rugs. Rugs are usually made of 65% Wool or Silk yarn and 35% cotton yarn, backed by a strong cotton fabric. Chain stitch embroidery covers the entire surface of the rug. Traditionally pastel coloured Hessian cloth is used for chain stitch work. Thus light pinks, blues, greens and creams are predominant colours, working in traditional Kashmiri floral motifs and patterns. Chain stitch embroidery covers the entire surface of the rug, creating an embossed effect on the surface of the cloth. This effect is increased by the use of dark threads adjacent to light ones. Chain stitched rugs or Gabbas have become very popular in India. In the course of time chain stitch rugs have achieved the status of a full-fledged craft form. These rugs have become so popular, that they are also being used as decorative pieces and wall hangings.T> Powered by eBay Turbo Lister The free listing tool.
