Description
Untitled Document     This is an auction for 4 books of composition gold leaf and 50ml of JHS Glair   As a book binder or anyone working on leather, in the past the only choice for which glaire to use lay in either egg albumen glaire, which is derived from the beaten whites of eggs, or the spirit/shellac based BS Glaire, which some people did not like because of the fumes from the alcohol. JHS glaire is also a shellac based size manufactured by J.Hewit & Sons Ltd. It is used and applied in exactly the same simple way as BS Glaire and has the same advantages as the spirit based glaire, which is that books can be glaired up at the same time and left for long periods of time if needed, before the actual finishing is carried out. The advantage that JHS glaire has is that it is an aqueous solution and odorless. I am using this glaire at the moment and I am very happy with it.       I have been a devotee of composition gold leaf for more than 15 years, when I discovered it while looking for a convincing alternative to gold leaf which was very expensive, and gold foil, which was very cheap and also looked very cheap on the books I titled with it. Composition gold leaf is cheap, but use it intelligently and you can get excellent results. Composition gold leaf comes in a variety of shades, the one I sell is the nearest I could find in terms of colour to genuine 23 carat gold leaf of the type used in craft bookbinding. Like gold foil, composition gold leaf will tarnish in time if not sealed with a thin lacquer, I used to paint over each letter with a fine brush and I got very good results.     Also with this auction is a free copy of my popular manual which details an illustrated step by step method which will help you get good results if gilding for the first time. I was taught gilding by a distinguished master of the art, Mr John Mitchell, I took what he taught me, and what I have learnt over 20 years as a professional book binder and tried to arrive at a slightly simplified method of gilding aimed at those approaching the art of gilding for the first time, I believe this method offers the best chance of success to the novice.   Postage to the UK £1.99 Airmail Postage to the USA £2.30 Airmail   If you are a book binder, or are thinking of taking up the craft, do have a look at my about me page, here you will find all my current and forthcoming free manuals which will be of interest to the novice and experienced bookbinder.
