Description
2008 Bernina Artista 630 with 440 BSR -Used In original boxes, 17 minutes of use, $5000 machine! See my guide to Buying a Bernina on eBay - http://search.reviews.ebay.com/members/judysue! I will include a dozen first-quality quilter's fat quarters with your purchase! The original owner purchased this Bernina Artista 630 one month ago and then decided to upgrade to a 730, so here it is - technically "used" but in reality NEW! It shows only 17 MINUTES of use . . . see my photograph of the screen that shows this below (the higher numbers show the time the machine was turned on). (I added a couple of minutes after the photo was taken to test it out - it works great!) Still in the original boxes ready to ship to you! I have added the Bernina Stitch Regulator, normally an option on this machine (included only on the 440QE as a standard accessory). The MSRP on the 630 with the BSR is $4995, so this is an exceptional deal. It is guaranteed to be in perfect working order. Check my feedback and buy with confidence . . . I have sold a number of recent model Berninas over the past couple of years. My personal sewing machine is a 630 just like this, and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! I have owned Berninas for nearly 30 years, and purchased the 440 QE when it was introduced because I wanted the Bernina Stitch Regulator. Then when the 630 came out, my dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse, and I traded up to the 630 with the BSR. I loved the 440, but I love the 630 even more and think it is the best machine I have ever owned! Since it is computerized, it is very easy to use - just find the stitch you want on the touch screen and select it. The machine not only shows you the stitch as it is being sewn, but also makes all the adjustments for you and tells you which presser foot is suggested. If you make changes to the stitch, you can save them permanently, either making the change to the basic stitch or saving a copy of it in your Personal Program section. Then the next time you use it, you can just open up your Personal Program, choose that stitch, and viola . . . all the changes you have made are already remembered for you! I use this constantly - for example, when I use the Blanket Stitch for machine applique, I have a stitch length and width that I prefer, so I save these. When I do Invisible Machine Applique, I often use the "vari-overlock" stitch, but it is necessary to mirror image that stitch, so I do the mirroring, set the needle position, stitch width, and length that I prefer and save it to my Personal Program. NOTE: This does everything the 440 does and much MORE plus it is easier to use! If you were thinking about a 440, take a close look at this as well . . . in my opinion, even though it is more money, it is the better buy. The other two Artistas - the 640 and top-of-the-line 730 - are both 9mm machines. The 630 is a 5.5mm machine - as a quilter, I prefer the 5.5mm machines since they make a perfect true straight stitch, the best you will find anywhere*, and I find the wide feed dogs on the 9mm machines sometimes eat at the tiny seam allowances I use when piecing. The wider stitches may sound appealing, but in reality I rarely used them when I had a 200/730. The 630 is so responsive that I feel in total control of the machine, which is very smooth and quiet. My dealer is trying to convince me to trade my 630 in on a new 830 but I told him I am still very happy with the 630 (and don't really want to spend $10,000 on a sewing machine!). *The straight stitch on the 9mm machines is actually the same as the zig-zag with a stitch width of zero whereas the 5.5mm machines have a separate straight stitch. The 5.5 and 9Mmmmachines have different types of bobbin systems and bobbins - the CB hook on the 5.5 machines and the rotary hook on the 9mm machines. The embroidery system is optional on the 630 and NOT included with this machine but can easily be added. All you need to do is plug in the embroidery unit - it is ready to go, and your manual already explains how to use it. Unlike the Bernina Auroras 430 and 440, you don't need special software or a computer to embroider with the 630 - everything needed to resize, rotate, recolor, and do other basic editing functions for embroidery designs is already part of the 630's internal computer. See my other listings for the embroidery unit that will fit this machine! Buy both and there will be no additional shipping for the embroidery unit. If you have never used the Bernina Stitch Regulator, you are in for a treat! I had done some machine quilting before getting a BSR but was never that happy with the results. After getting the BSR, my quilting improved dramatically. Regardless of how fast or slow you move the fabric, the stitch regulator senses this and keeps the stitches at an even length. Not having to think about coordinating how fast I moved the fabric with how fast I ran the machine, I was able to concentrate on design instead. What a difference! The BSR was like training wheels for me, and now I often machine quilt without using it! You are also able to quilt (or use any stitch on the machine) by unplugging the foot control and pushing a start-stop button instead. (See some of my tips on using this machine below.) The BSR on the 630 will do either a straight stitch or a zig-zag stitch. The 630 comes with 480 stitches, including 4 alphabet styles, 7 buttonholes, 25 quilting stitches and 188 decorative stitches. I'll never use them half of them! (Don't be fooled by the simplicity of the outside of the machine - this machine does everything!) The machine comes with the accessories that came with it new - presser feet #1 (all purpose), #2 (Overlock foot), #3 (buttonhole foot), #3A (automatic buttonhole), #20 (open toe embroidery foot), #5 (blind hem), #4 (zipper foot), and #9 (darning foot). Also, extra bobbins, screwdriver, cleaning brush, stylus, and more. The accessory case attaches to the back of the machine for transport, and there is a soft-sided dark blue carrying bag (never removed from its packing plastic) that holds the machine and accessories perfectly. It has a clear slide-on table and the Bernina knee control which raises and lowers the presser foot. It has a printed manual and an instructional CD. NOTE: Bernina warranties are not transferable so you will not be getting a manufacturer's warranty on the machine (or on any other Bernina you buy on eBay, regardless of what the seller might tell you). For more information, read my Guide to Buying a Bernina, linked at the beginning of this description. Sorry, USA sales only for this item! Judy's Tips on Using the BSR for Machine Quilting You have two modes - in Mode 1, the machine begins stitching in place immediately, very slowly, and then speeds up when you move the fabric. In Mode 2, the machine will not stitch until you move the fabric. You can use the start-stop button or the foot control with either mode . . . ignore anyone who tells you that you are "supposed" to use one particular mode with the start-stop button or the foot control - this is just not true and there is nothing in the Bernina documentation that tells you this! Experiment with all possible combinations and use the one you like best! I find I change the mode depending on what kind of quilting I am doing. Sometimes I use the foot control, and sometimes I use the start-stop button and I use both modes. The start-stop button works with any stitch on the machine, not just the BSR! You may find times this will be useful - control the machine's speed using the convenient slider button. Try using clear monofilament thread when you first begin to machine quilt . . . any errors will not be as obvious. As you gain confidence, start to use visible threads. Adjust your tension whenever you are using different theads on the top and in the bobbin - this is especially true of monofilament, but applies to any thread differences! Even using the same thread in two different colors might require a tension adjustment. Machine quilter extraordinaire Diane Gaudynski says that even temperature and humidity changes can affect tension. (Do a search on her name to find her web site . . . it has lots of machine quilting tips and more!) It may be tricky to plug the BSR foot into the outlet, which is behind the presser foot. I have my machine in a cabinet and find I can see the reflection of the outlet (which has a green light) in the Plexiglas insert, making it easy to plug in. Other people use a mirror - easier than trying to twist your neck to look at the outlet! Bernina says to lower your presser foot pressure to zero when using the BSR, but frankly I have never seen a difference when I forget to do this! I attended a program given by Libby Lehman and she said exactly the same thing! I prefer thin battings - maybe you will see a difference if your batting is thicker. If the BSR doesn't want to work, you probably didn't put your feed dogs down. Or perhaps you forgot to press the BSR button. Get out the manual and go through the steps again. How long you press a button makes a difference with some buttons on this machine! When you push the back stitch button and release it immediately, it will make one backstitch and then start stitching forward again. If you hold it in a little longer, it will switch to permanent back stitching until you hold the button in again. The same thing applies to the needle up-down button. Press it once to move the needle - hold it in a little longer and the needle will always end up or down (you can see an arrow on the screen that will tell you what it is doing). Be sure to use a sharp needle, not a ball point or universal needle, when you are sewing on quilting cotton. I usually use a 60 or 70 "Microtex" needle from Schmetz, but a "quilting" or "jeans" needle also has a sharp point. (I will include a new package of size 70 Microtex needles for you!) Change your needle often, and don't buy cheap needles! If your machine is skipping stitches or otherwise having problems, the first thing to check is the needle. It may be bent or have a rough spot.  Buy good quality thread! Bargain thread is not a bargain! I personally like the "long fiber" Egyptian cotton threads like Aurifil, YLI, some threads from Superior, or Essentials thread from Connecting Threads. The long fiber threads are not nearly as linty as other cotton threads. Check your bobbin area frequently and clean it out with the brush. (Or even better, get an attachment for your vacuum cleaner.) All the oiling you need to do for the Bernina is one drop from time to time in the bobbin race - just run the machine on a scrap piece of fabric for a minute to remove any excess oil. The machine actually reminds you when it is time to oil it. There is a limit on how fast you can run the machine when using the BSR . . . you can activate a warning beep which tells you when you are going too fast for the BSR to keep up by holding in the "1" or "2" button. It didn't take me long to learn when I was going too fast, and now I rarely activate the beep. Make yourself a stitch sampler with various stitch lengths . . . the default stitch length for the BSR is 2, but I usually reduce that to 1.7 or smaller, depending on what I am doing. The smaller scale your quilting design, the smaller the stitch length should be! If you are stippling or doing other quilting with tight curves, a small stitch length is essential. If you do a lot of machine quilting, the straight stitch plate is a nice addition - some people think the stitch quality is improved with this. You can tell the machine that this is being used so you won't accidentally break a needle by trying to move the needle position. NOTE: There are a number of fraudulent auctions for recent model Berninas listed every day on eBay. Here are some red flags to identifying a fraudulent listing: very low starting price with no reserve along with a too-good-to-be-true "Buy It Now" price that appears only in the listing text email address in the body of the description one day listing listed in incorrect category seller's other listings have a number of other popular & expensive electronic items also listed at a very low price Many of these listings are done with hijacked accounts, so you may see a good feedback record (that usually will have no clue that the "seller" knows anything about sewing!). If you ever do ask a question of one of these sellers, never use an email address given within the description - use the "Ask Seller a Question" link and hide your email address - eBay provides a check box on the "Ask a Question" form to do this. You can report any listing you think is fraudulent by clicking the "Report this item" link at the very bottom of the page. These listings usually steal photos and descriptions (INCLUDING MINE!) from successful auctions, so they may look familiar to you! Check out my feedback and bid with confidence. I have sold many Berninas in the nine years I have been selling on eBay. Check my "ME" page (click on link behind my ID) for some great web sites on quilt history and more!
