This is our beautiful 1/2 pound 5.75" Brass Carving Mallet.  The brass head has a diameter of 1 3/8" and height of 1.75".  The cherry finished wood handle is 4" long.  The benefit to using a brass or bronze mallet is the exacting dead blow applied with each thrust.  Where with a wood mallet there is the loss or power caused by the absorption of the wood fibers. And yes, the handle can be unscrewed should you want to create your own.
